Monuments and markers

Stories of God's faithfulness become markers for future generations, helping them remember His power and trust Him.

Joshua 4:21-22

Beginning in Missouri and snaking through Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming, and Idaho, the famed Oregon Trail stretches over 2,200 miles to Oregon City, Oregon. Hundreds of thousands of settlers traversed the arduous and treacherous trail in search of a new life out West. And as these pioneers travelled, they erected monuments and markers along the way.

These markers were a way for them to memorialize their journey and to celebrate successes or remember hardships. Ultimately, they are a way to preserve the history of these pioneers' sacrifices. Because when people see a monument, they want to find out why it's there.

When God brought His people safely across the Jordan after decades of wandering in the wilderness, He instructed them to gather stones and place them at the point where they crossed, so that future generations would know the great thing God had done.

You may not build any physical monuments to tell your story, but you can pass down your own history of how God has worked in and through your life. God wants you to tell your children and their children what He has done for you. And not only once, but continually.

Through your example of God's faithfulness, those who come after you can witness the greatness of God and learn to trust Him in their own journey. Your story can be a powerful gift to future generations!

  2. Who is someone you can share a story of God's faithfulness with this week?
