Daily Living Devotional
You're created for community
Made in God's image, we were created for communion with Him and with others, and Christ understands our loneliness.
When couples have a baby, one of the most common questions they will hear is, "Who does the baby look most like?"
The truth is that because they are made of DNA from both parents, they will have attributes of each person. Mom's eyes or nose, dad's ears or hair (or lack thereof as they grow older). And we share more than physical features. Our personalities come at least in part from our parents.
But our parents aren't the only ones who imprint themselves on us. We are all made in the image of God. And Genesis 1:26 provides a wonderful picture of what this means for us and humans.
Notice that God said, "Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us."
This was our triune God - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - speaking. From eternity past, God has existed as three persons, living in community, in communion, with Himself. He delighted in this community and wanted humanity to share in that.
So when God made you in His image, you were created with a longing for community, a desire to not be alone. Your longing isn't just for communion with God, but with other humans as well.
God knows just how fulfilling and joyous it is to live in unity. And because Christ experienced life on earth, and ultimately separation from His heavenly community with Father and Spirit, He also understands your pain when you feel disconnected.
You can trust Him with your desires and hurts because He created you and He's been where you are.
