You're entrusted

Stewardship means knowing the condition of what God has entrusted to us so we can protect, manage, and bless.

Proverbs 27:23

Most of us these days don't tend flocks or possess herds. And it's likely that you are not a farmer, so you may wonder how this Proverb applies to you.

In ancient times, herds and flocks were a tangible measure of a person's wealth. So keeping close tabs on the condition of those animals was much like you checking your bank or retirement account balance.

Understood in that light, Proverbs 27:23 is saying that we are to be not only aware, but involved in our financial affairs, caring for them as farmers would protect their sheep and cattle.

Careful attention meant feeding the animals, protecting them from the elements, and from those who would try to steal the animals - dishonest people who were seeking to get rich off of the efforts of others.

As a steward of the things God has entrusted to you, one of the things you are called to do is to know the condition of your finances. God wants you to make wise decisions and investments, and to be on the lookout for those who might take advantage of or steal from you.

Not only is this good stewardship a benefit to you and your family, but it's also a witness to those around you, as you care for the blessings you've been given and can use those to bless others.
