Thriving in the Fourth Quarter of Life

There’s something powerful about the fourth quarter of a football game.

By that point, the excitement of kickoff has passed. The crowd noise may feel different. Players are tired.

And yet, every play matters more. Because the outcome of the game is often decided in that final stretch.

In many ways, the later years of life resemble that fourth quarter. Excitement may wane. Energy changes. And it becomes tempting to wonder whether your most meaningful moments are behind you.

Recently, Joanie and I spoke with Dr. Kent Tucker on the Meaningful Moments podcast about what it means to thrive in this season of life—and the conversation was both practical and deeply encouraging.

One of the most important truths we discussed is this: finishing well doesn’t happen by accident.

It begins with a decision—a quiet resolve in your heart to finish strong for Christ.

As simple as it sounds, intention matters. If you aim at nothing, you’ll hit it every time. But when you purpose in your heart to honor Christ in this season, your days take on renewed focus and meaning.

That resolve is sustained not by striving, but by intimacy.

Thriving in the fourth quarter means continuing to pursue closeness with Jesus: walking with Him, talking with Him, inviting Him into ordinary conversations and daily routines. This season of life can become one of your richest spiritually.

There is often a depth of dependence and awareness of God’s presence that earlier years did not allow.

And no one thrives alone.

Community remains vital. Surrounding yourself even with just a small group of faithful friends strengthens your endurance.

Scripture reminds us that the friend of the wise grows wise. Encouragement, accountability, shared prayer, these are not optional extras in the fourth quarter. They are part of how God sustains you.

Staying close to family and trusted friends matters more than ever, too. Relationships deepen. Prayers grow more intentional. Words of wisdom carry greater weight. This season is not about withdrawing from influence, it is about stewarding it carefully.

Another powerful reminder from our conversation was this: God is always at work around you.

There are people in your life who are quietly searching; sensing that something is missing, wondering about Christ, standing near a moment of spiritual decision. You may not always see it, but the Lord is often positioning you in ways that matter eternally.

Your prayers…

Your conversations…

Your steady faith…

Your example of perseverance…

These things carry more weight than you realize.

Thriving in the fourth quarter is not about recovering the energy of earlier years. It is about faithful endurance. It is about pursuing Christ deeply. It is about staying connected. It is about remaining attentive to how God is still moving in you and through you.

Most of all, it is about trusting that the One who began a good work in you will carry it to completion.

Your fourth quarter matters. And you are not striving alone.
